This feature gives you the ability to add annotations to your videos in the form of visual overlays.

To add annotations to a video, go to a procedure page, click on the edit button in the top-right corner of the video player, and select "Annotate".

There are a number of different types of annotations you can add which are as follows:

  • Text - you can add custom text as an overlay on your video
  • Shapes - you can add certain shapes as overlays to your video. The shape options include circles/ovals, arrows, and squares.

For each of these annotation types, you have the following options:

  • Position - where on the video the annotation is placed
  • Start time - the start time in the video in which the annotation will show up
  • Duration (in seconds) - how long the annotation should stay visible on the screen
  • Font size (for text annotations)
  • Font color (for text annotations)
  • Font styling (for text annotations)
    • bold, italic, underline, opacity, background color
  • Size/shape (for circles/ovals, squares/rectangles, and arrows) - you can change the width/height of each shape by dragging the handles on the annotation.

To begin adding annotations, select from one of the options in the bottom of the editor. Once you add an annotation, you will see the properties window in which you can configure your annotation with the aforementioned options.

You can use your mouse to move the annotation to the desired location on the video.

Note: you can have multiple annotations with the same start time and duration so that they are all visible at the same time.

Here is an example of adding a text annotation, adding an arrow, and rotating the arrow:

The side panel on the right-hand side of the page is where you can see all annotations that have been added. You can click on one to access that annotation's properties.

You can also group-delete annotations by clicking the edit button in the top-right of the Annotations side bar.

Adding a title card

You can also add a title card to your video. A title card is a way to add an introductory screen that will play at the beginning of your video. The title card is a solid-color screen that plays only at the beginning of a video for a duration that you set. You can add any annotations to the title card.

To add a title card, click "Add Title Card" at the bottom-left corner of the Annotations Editor.

Once you add a title card, you can change the duration of the title card. The default duration is 3 seconds. You can also change the color of the title card itself. The default color is black. From here, you can add any additional text or shape annotations.

Saving and enabling annotations

Once you are done adding annotations, click the blue "Save" button in the bottom-right of the video player.

Note: by default, annotations are hidden from playback until an Admin enables them for the video. However, you can still add/edit/delete annotations even when they are hidden from the viewer. To enable the annotations for viewing playback, an Admin will need to toggle on the setting in the "Manage content settings" modal.

From this modal, toggle on the "Show annotations during video playback" setting.
